animated painting

snipit
For the next turbo sketch, I decided that it'd be fun to see it animated. The idea of committing a month or so (on and off) to a spur of the moment drawing appealed to me. Its like Noah's Ark meets the civil war meets the A team. I once again joined forces with composer, sound designer Kyle Blanton Ross http://www.mindasaportal.com/index.html. Its kind of an excercise, kind of an experiment, kind of fun to see these different elements smashed together into one flu nighmare inducing animation.

commercial

This summer I had the pleasure of designing and animating this spot while working for Yozux studios (http://www.yozux.com/) It kind of felt like making a 48 hr film at Calarts, except for work. A couple of scenes were taken out; one with a french WWI soldier and a nurse, as well as one with 2 astronauts. But all in all it ended up being pretty epic... like The Highlander...but with loob... If your under 9 yrs old, you probably shouldnt watch this.

MashUPs

These drawings were done fairly quickly. The coloring, however took quite a bit more time. In doing the coloring, the stories of what is happening in the drawings came out alot more. This was very interesting beause the initial drawings are stream of conciousness. The coloring and refining of them bring out these common themes and ideas, its like a turbo psycho-analysis...

Evolution

A quick animation study done in Corny Cole's class. In an attempt to dissect the nature of human evolutionary trends. I found that the animated medium was of value in our quest for truth ok.

The Tale of Hastings Von Brindlethorpe

Out of work due to a drought, Hastings Von Brindlethorpe created the worlds first "unbailer" which sent all of the hay that he had bailed back throughout the field, allowing him to continue working. One day he slipped on a banana peel and fell into the machine, sending him into the murky waters of the great unknown.

the art of parenting

I was asked by my sister in law jen to draw up the cover for the next issue of the magazine where she's the editor. I agreed, then thought about it for a couple of seconds. And then went back to eating my sandwich which consisted of swiss cheese and turkey breast. I had also put mayo and mustard on it; which I was opposed to for several years, but then regained a fondness for the both of them together... But thats neither here nor there.

screwy doodles/ dudy noodles

Here go some doodles I thought I'd share with you since sharing is an important part of life and I don't do it enough on my blog. These 2 guys I saw in new york hanging out. The rhino was in paris. Which, I might add is a great city and I'd suggest visiting if you get the chance. But enough generalizations. Its pretty much just like the Anthony Waller film American Werewolf in Paris

The Deadline

The Deadline from Andres Salaff on Vimeo.

The Deadline is my second year film from Calarts. It is heavily inspired by the writings of Latin American surrealist writers Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortazar. I was exposed to their works while I was studying Latin American Literature at the Ohio State University before attending Calarts. As usual the story went through many phases before reaching the one that was made, its was far trippier before and maybe a little less comprehensible, believe it or not. The final outcome ended up being a competition of sorts between the two writers as to who can finish their books.
